The term "Owning Your Internet Space" refers to the visibility of your website in certain search categories. Ownership is achieved through a process of optimizing your website over several key search engines. This is referred to as Search Engine Optimization or (SEO).

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is used in all aspects of web marketing. You need to understand as much as you can about how SEO works in order to get the proper marketing of your website online.

When you use SEO in all of your content - both text and visual, you can draw more traffic to your site. In order to understand how to use SEO, you need to know why people use this type of marketing and rely on it so heavily in order to get the desired traffic to their website. SEO is what gets a website noticed in the search engines.

So what exactly is SEO? This sets up your text, photos and videos so that they are easy to find when someone is searching for them using the various search engines online. While it is often said that Google relies more on SEO content than Yahoo, which relies more on link building, the truth of the matter is that in order for a website to be discovered online, it must come up in the search engine.

For example, if you have a website that sells cooking appliances, you will want to make sure that you structure your site so that others who may be looking for the products you sell will be able to find it online. Those who are looking online for what you have to sell may do it in a number of different ways, although the easiest way for someone to find something online is to use the search engines. Most of the traffic to your website will come from search engine optimization.

You need to know which keywords will work for your website. These are the words or phrases that people will put into the search engine bars to receive the search engine results pages. Many people today are putting in longer phrases into the search engines to narrow down their search.

There are tools that the website owner can use to investigate the best keywords for their website, based on what they sell and what words potential customers are likely to plug into the search bars that will lead them to the site. In order to succeed at this, a website owner must not only know the concept of SEO, but also much about the target market, which is those who are most likely to purchase the products on the website.

If you are just starting out your website, or if you have a website up and running already, you need to know how to use search engine optimization in all facets of your marketing. While there are other ways to market your website and products without using SEO, the fact of the matter is that 60 percent of all traffic on websites comes from those who found the website in the search engines. These people are seeking out what you have to offer and are finding you online as long as you are accessible.

Do this and your business will fail!

Marketing Strategies and Solutions: 5 Marketing Mistake that will Destroy Your Business!

In today’s challenging marketplace not only is there completion in your neighborhood or city, but now the competition is from around the world! If you make marketing mistakes your competitors will get your business. We have highlighted five (5) critical mistakes that will destroy any small business.

Mistake #1: Do You Know What You Are Selling?

You may find this question surprising. However, many small business owners do not know what they are selling. A simple example: If you ask most sign company owners what are they selling they will tell you signs. But in reality they are selling marketing services. How you perceive your product determines how you market. Wrong perception, wrong strategies.

Solution:

Your biggest marketing success will come from knowing what you are selling and your ability to describe it to clients with a simple, but powerful definition.

Mistake #2: I will Market When the Economy Gets Better

You are adopting a wait and see approach to the current economic climate. You believe that things will get better in time so it is best to wait- it -out until the economy improves. We call this the “Keep Hope Alive” marketing strategy.

Solution: Act Immediately

Your competitors are not waiting. Now is the time to take action. Whether it is simple grass-root or street level marketing, cooperative marketing with suppliers, or the hundreds of simple marketing solutions, this is the time to take action.

Mistake #3: The Way I’ve been doing it has always Worked

You have all the answers and insist on doing business the way it has always been done. You are not interested in new marketing methods, technology, or new ways to connect. You say, “To hell with Twitter and Facebook.” You don’t understand what all the excitement is about. Your business is by word-of-mouth and will continue to be.

Solution: Open yourself to All of the New Marketing Methodologies.

Educate yourself in new marketing methods. Just because it worked then, doesn’t guarantee it will continue to work in the future. Technology is allowing everyone to connect in cyberspace. The customer is different, the market is different, and you need to find new means of communicating and connecting with them.

Mistake #4: The Marketplace Knows who we are. They know we are the best.

May small business owners do not understand that marketing is a battle of perceptions. This simple truth trips up thousands of small business owners each year. Many owners get preoccupied with doing research and "getting the facts." In most cases they analyze their situation to make sure that truth is on their side. Then they enter into the marketplace thinking that they have the best product and that the best product will win.

Solution:

That's an illusion. There is no objective reality. There are no facts. There are no best products. All that exists in the world of marketing are perceptions in the minds of the customer or prospect. This perception is the reality. Everything else is an illusion.

Mistake #5: Not Being In Control Of Your Marketing Efforts

Many small business owners relegate the control of their marketing efforts to lower level employees. This is disaster waiting to happen. When business owners don’t take charge of their marketing strategy, things rarely go well. Your marketing strategy is too important to be left to your secretary.

Question: Why is marketing important to the success of your business?  Answer:  It is the only way to effectively bring both short-term and long-term customer to your business. Word of mouth, which is a great basic form of marketing, is not enough to get attention from the crowded marketplace. .

The question I consistently get from a lot of small business clients is how do I market my small business without breaking my bank. My answer is simple choose from a menu of marketing strategies (Marketing Mix)  that fall within your budget, and develop a marketing plan to implement them  Let’s start with the basics:

Develop a clear Brand Identity

Create a logo and color scheme. Try to choose a logo that is catchy, creative, and easily recognized. Use colors that complement with each other to create a symbol that would enhance business recognition.  Make sure your brand identity creates the right emotion. When clients see your logo do you want them to feel excited, happy, or enticed? Is your business for fun, quality, or casual appeal?  Make sure that your brand and all subsequent marketing materials reflect the image you want.

Signage

If your business has a storefront, create signs that would easily catch the attention of passersby. Use colors and designs that complement your logo, and are easily seen from the street.

Marketing Mix

There are several low cost methods you can choose from when creating your marketing mix.

  • Business cards these are small cards that carry your business name, address, contact number(s), and any other pertinent information regarding your business.  Business cards are inexpensive, simple, and easy to produce.
  • Postcards are actually simple cards that are meant to be mailed or hand delivered  to customers and potential customers. Often, they are used for advertising purposes, other times as a reply form or an insert to company letters. Postcards are inexpensive, simple, and easy to produce.
  • Brochures are leaflet types of material that are used to showcase all the products and services of the company in an easy-to-read and eye-catching manner. A brochure basically sums up everything about the company; it is the face of the company in the business world.
  • Stationery, pens, t-shirts, sticky notes, and others. These marketing tools are used to promote the business in a more artistic manner. As these materials are often used by customers, they can be effective carriers of the business name. They are also cost-effective to produce taking up only a small amount of your budget.

So, which marketing mix is right for your business?

A winery can create fliers announcing an open house or tasting party. A car wash can use discount coupons printed on business or postcards. Fliers can work for service companies, and brochures for inns and hotels. And in all businesses, printing business cards will always help introduce you and your business to your target customers.

With little effort and a good marketing plan, you can easily grow your business and maintain good customer relations. These strategies won’t actually take up most of your budget. Once you find the right mix with which to attract a steady flow of customers, you are on your way to bringing your business to a new height.
